Medication Abortion and Surgical Abortion.
A medication abortion involves the use of prescription medication to end a pregnancy. It is sometimes called the “abortion pill.” This method is approved for use in early pregnancy, typically up to 10 weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period.
Medication abortion usually involves two drugs:
The first medication, mifepristone, blocks progesterone – a hormone needed to continue a pregnancy. Without progesterone, the pregnancy cannot continue to develop.
The second medication, misoprostol, is taken later (usually within 24–48 hours). It causes the uterus to contract and empty, leading to bleeding and cramping as the pregnancy tissue passes.
Because medication abortion can involve heavy bleeding, cramping, and possible complications, it is important to receive accurate medical education and understand the potential risks before making a decision.
The cost of a medication abortion can vary depending on location and provider. The type of procedure used depends on how many weeks pregnant you are.
Like any medical procedure, medication abortion carries possible risks and side effects.
Serious complications are considered uncommon, but they can occur. Death related to medication abortion is rare, but has been reported.
It is important to speak with a qualified healthcare provider, understand the potential risks, and know when to seek emergency medical care.
Surgical abortion is a medical procedure used to end a pregnancy. During the procedure, pregnancy tissue is removed from the uterus using medical instruments and suction. In some cases, medication may be given to help with comfort or sedation. The use of anesthesia or sedation can increase the overall cost of the procedure.
Surgical abortion procedures are typically grouped by how many weeks pregnant you are.
Laws regarding abortion vary by state. In South Carolina, abortion is restricted after early cardiac activity (heartbeat) is detected, except in limited circumstances.
Second-trimester abortion is restricted in South Carolina under current law.
The cost of a surgical abortion can vary depending on gestational age, facility, anesthesia, and medical needs. Costs may range from approximately $600 to over $2,000.
As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks, including:
Serious complications are uncommon, but they can occur. Death related to surgical abortion is rare, but has been reported. It is important to speak with a qualified healthcare provider, understand the potential risks, and know when to seek emergency medical care.

Have an Ultrasound
It is important to know how far along you are before making decisions about your pregnancy. Accurate gestational dating helps guide safe and informed care.
An ultrasound can:
If a pregnancy is further along than expected, certain procedures, including medication abortion, may carry increased risks. A limited OB ultrasound performed after approximately the 7th week of pregnancy can help evaluate pregnancy location and early development.
Consider the Risks and Emotional Impact
Like any medical decision, abortion carries possible physical and emotional effects. Some women experience emotional distress after abortion. Feelings can vary from relief to grief, sadness, or regret. Ongoing emotional support may be helpful. Research shows that mental health experiences after abortion differ for each person. Some studies report higher levels of emotional distress among women who experience unintended pregnancy and abortion, especially if they do not feel supported.
